Pointed Stick

DAY 5

Nothing like using public ridicule and humiliation as a pointed stick.

DGM has a somewhat chequered history at satisfying its core purpose of "bringing Art into the world". If that is deemed to simply mean "creation and distribution" then we are a success. The various King Crimson boxed sets demonstrate this.

But we fail spectacularly at the other necessary component, that of "finding your audience". King Crimson already has its audience, but in the case of Soundscapes and The Vicar, we are nothing less than hopeless. Well not hopeless. I am still full of hope - and have exactly another 360 days to prove it. Either DGM succeeds this year in helping them find their audience, or I see no viable long-term future. King Crimson archives alone (wonderful though they be) do not offer a sustainable future.

There will be numerous initiatives throughout the year. The guestbook may now have become an outmoded system, but anyone wishing to offer their support (or indeed ideas) will be welcomed on Twitter or Facebook (or even email).

And for my part, I shall document the progress (or lack of it), using public humiliation as an extra incentive to prove that there really is a viable independent route for our wonderful industry.

5 Days down. I spend my first day in the office and left feeling that absolutely nothing had been achieved. Moving at the snail speed of Broadchalke. Hmmm!
